Femring Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Estradiol acetate vaginal ring

ESTRADIOL (Estring™, Femring™) vaginal ring is an insert that contains a natural estrogen female hormone. It is essential for maintaining normal female functions and is normally produced by the ovaries. After menopause, the ovaries decrease their production of this hormone. In addition, the Femring™ vaginal ring can help relieve hot flashes, as it contains a higher estrogen dosage than other vaginal rings. Estradiol is a form of estrogen. Estrogen is a female sex hormone necessary for many processes in the body.

Femring Dosage

There are two doses of Femring available: 0.05 milligrams a day and 0.10 milligrams a day. Each ring should remain in the vagina for 3 months.

Uses of Femring

  • Estradiol vaginal (systemic) is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation.
  • Estradiol vaginal (systemic) may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Femring

If you are taking this medication, then discuss the side effects with your doctor. If you feel any change in intensity, then you should tell your doctor. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Femring. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • back pain
  • bloating
  • breast tenderness
  • hair loss
  • headache
  • high blood pressure
  • high blood sugar
  • irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • liver problems
  • nausea and vomiting
  • uterine pain
  • vaginal yeast infections
  • water retention

Warnings and precautions before taking Femring:

  • This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, certain cancers including such as breast cancer, especially non-metastatic type, blood clots, active/recent stroke, heart attack.
  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have family medical history, asthma, diabetes, seizures, migraine headaches, liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), any allergies.
  • You should use estrogen with caution if you have severely low blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia).

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking certain drugs with Femring, then it may decreased, increased or altered the effects of Femring medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Femring with the following:

  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
  • Clarithromycin (Biaxin)
  • Erythromycin (E-Mycin, Erytab, Erythrocin, and others)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rimactane)
  • Ritonavir (Norvir)
Overdose

When you are taking Femring, and you feel that overdose is suspected then contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an Femring overdose may include:-

  • nausea
  • vomting
  • vaginal bleeding
