Arnica

Arnica is derived from the herb Arnica montana (also known as Leopard's Bane, Wolf's Bane or Mountain Arnica), a plant used since the 16th century as a remedy for bruises, muscular aches and pains, and rheumatism.

Treatment Use

Arnica is useful when any of the following are indicated:

Mental and emotional aspects

  • Irritability
  • Nervousness and oversensitivity
  • Inability to focus on a task for long
  • Forgetfulness and indifference
  • Agoraphobia
  • All forms of shock
  • Bereavement.

Physical aspects

  • Post-surgical convalescence
  • Labour pains and childbirth
  • Sore muscles
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Backache and joint pain
  • Sprains
  • Black eyes Accidents and falls
  • Hot, sensitive, aching headache
  • Heavy, tired eyes
  • Concussion
  • Nosebleeds
  • Sore muscles in chest following a bad cough
  • Over-exertion Vertigo.

Modalities

  • Better: for lying down.
  • Worse: for moving; cold, damp weather.

Treatment Tips

Arnica is a key remedy for all forms of muscular pain and bruising. It is also very useful applied topically to unbroken skin in a cream or ointment form or as a compress using the tincture. Arnica is one of the most commonly used remedies and is an over-the-counter bestseller.
