Dalmane Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Flurazepam hydrochloride

Flurazepam is in a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Flurazepam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and that may cause insomnia or anxiety. Dalmane is used for the relief of insomnia, waking up frequently at night, or waking up early in the morning. It can be used by people those who have poor sleeping habits.

Dalmane Dosage

  • For adults, the usual recommended dose is 30 milligrams at bedtime.
  • Safety and effectiveness of Dalmane have not been established in children under 15 years of age.

Uses of Dalmane

  • Flurazepam is used to induce sleep and cause relaxation.
  • Flurazepam may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Dalmane

If you are taking this medication, then discuss the side effects with your doctor. If you feel any change in intensity, then you should tell your doctor. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Dalmane. Side effects may include:

  • Apprehension
  • bitter taste
  • blurred vision
  • body and joint pain
  • burning eyes
  • chest pains
  • confusion
  • constipation
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty in focusing
  • dry mouth
  • exaggerated feeling of well-being
  • excessive salivation
  • excitement
  • faintness
  • flushes
  • genital and urinary tract disorders

Warnings and precautions before taking Dalmane:

  • If you are taking Dalmane, then it may cause you to become drowsy or less alert; therefore, you should not drive or operate dangerous machinery or participate in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness.
  • Before taking flurazepam, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other benzodiazepines or if you have any other allergies.
  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have liver disease, kidney disease, mental/mood problems including such as depression, panic disorder, lung problems including such as pulmonary insufficiency, sleep apnea, seizures, personal or family history of regular use/abuse of drugs/alcohol/other substances.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking certain drugs with Dalmane, then it may decreased, increased or altered the effects of Dalmane medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Dalmane with the following:

  • Antidepressants such as Elavil and Tofranil
  • Antihistamines such as Benadryl and Tavist
  • Barbiturates such as Seconal and phenobarbital
  • Major tranquilizers such as Mellaril and Thorazine
  • Narcotic painkillers such as Demerol and Tylenol with Codeine
  • Sedatives such as Xanax and Halcion
  • Tranquilizers such as Librium and Valium
Overdose

When you are taking Dalmane, and you feel that overdose is suspected then contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an Dalmane overdose may include:-

  • Coma
  • confusion
  • low blood pressure
  • sleepiness
  • dizziness
  • a slow heart beat
  • difficulty breathing
  • difficulty walking and talking
  • the appearance of being drunk
  • unconsciousness
