Ketek Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Telithromycin

Ketek is in a group of drugs known as antibiotics. Ketek helps the body fight infection that is caused by bacteria. TELITHROMYCIN (Ketek™) is an antibiotic. Telithromycin kills certain bacteria or stops their growth. It treats lung, sinus, and throat infections. Telithromycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Ketek Dosage

  • The usual dose is two 400-milligram tablets (for a total of 800 milligrams) taken once a day at the same time.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children have not been studied.

Uses of Ketek

Ketek is used to treat bacterial infections in the lungs and sinuses.

Side Effects of Ketek

If you are taking this medication, then discuss the side effects with your doctor. If you feel any change in intensity, then you should tell your doctor. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Ketek. Side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • nausea
  • headache
  • dizziness

Warnings and precautions before taking Ketek:

  • This medicine may cause various side effects and that could impair your ability to safely drive or operate machinary. So you should be aware of how you react to this medicine, even after the first dose, before driving or operating machinary.
  • Before taking telithromycin, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin, clarithromcyin, dirithromycin, or erythromycin; or if you have any other allergies.
  • You should not be used this medication if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, you should consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you have heart problems including such as congenital QTc prolongation, bradycardia.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have severe kidney disease/dialysis , liver problems, myasthenia gravis, certain electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia).

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking certain drugs with Ketek, then it may decreased, increased or altered the effects of Ketek medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ketek with the following:

  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune)
  • Diuretics (water pills) such as furosemide (Lasix) or
  • hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL, Esidrix)
  • Ergot-containing drugs such as Cafergot
  • Hexobarbital
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Midazolam (Versed)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rimactane)
  • Sirolimus (Rapamune)
  • Tacrolimus (Prograf)
Overdose

When you are taking Ketek, and you feel that overdose is suspected then contact your doctor immediately. Although no specific information on Ketek overdose is available.
