Eldepryl Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Selegiline hydrochloride

Eldepryl prevents the breakdown of a chemical in your brain known as dopamine. SELEGILINE (Carbex®, Eldepryl®) helps to increase or extend the effects of levodopa or carbidopa, and slow the progression of Parkinson's disease. Selegiline belongs to a class of drugs, known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), that block certain enzymes in the brain and change the balance of certain chemicals in the brain.

Eldepryl Dosage

  • The usual dosage of Eldepryl is 10 milligrams per day divided into 2 smaller doses of 5 milligrams each, taken at breakfast and lunch.
  • The use of Eldepryl in children has not been evaluated.

Uses of Eldepryl

  • Eldepryl is used together with other medicines to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease including such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, and poor muscle control.
  • Eldepryl is also used to treat similar muscle symptoms when they are caused by certain medicines, including such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), perphenazine (Trilafon), and others.

Side Effects of Eldepryl

If you are taking this medication, then discuss the side effects with your doctor. If you feel any change in intensity, then you should tell your doctor. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Eldepryl. Side effects may include:

  • Confusion
  • constipation
  • delusions
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty swallowing
  • disorientation
  • dizziness
  • double vision
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • excessive urination at night
  • eyelid spasm
  • facial grimace
  • facial hair
  • fainting
  • falling down
  • freezing
  • frequent urination
  • general feeling of illness
  • hair loss
  • hallucinations

Warnings and precautions before taking Eldepryl:

  • Before using this drug, you should tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have peptic ulcer, allergies (especially drug allergies).
  • Never take Eldepryl at a higher dosage than prescribed; doing so could put you at risk for a dangerous rise in blood pressure. If you develop a severe headache or any other unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking certain drugs with Eldepryl, then it may decreased, increased or altered the effects of Eldepryl medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Eldepryl with the following:

  • Antidepressant medications that raise serotonin levels, such as Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft
  • Antidepressant medications classified as tricyclics, such as Elavil and Tofranil
  • Narcotic painkillers such as Demerol, Percocet, and Tylenol with Codeine
Overdose

When you are taking Eldepryl, and you feel that overdose is suspected then contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an Eldepryl overdose may include:-

  • excitement
  • irritability
  • nervousness
  • insomnia
  • dizziness
  • severe headache
  • hallucinations
  • sweating
  • light-headedness
  • fainting
  • seizures
