Hamamelis

Hamamelis is derived from the witch-hazel plant. The twigs, bark and outer layer of the root are used.

Treatment Use

Hamamelis is useful when any of the following are indicated:

Mental and emotional aspects

  • Mild depression; the person feels better for being alone
  • Irritability and restlessness, particularly in the presence of others.

Physical aspects

  • Varicose veins Varicocele (varicose veins in the testes)
  • Heavy and tired, throbbing and itching, or stinging and aching legs
  • Irritated
  • Morning headaches and bloodshot eyes
  • Black eyes
  • Bruising
  • Chilblains
  • Nosebleeds
  • Mild skin rashes
  • Insect bites where accompanied with stinging and aching around the bite.
  • Acne and oil skin.

Modalities

  • Better: for fresh air; for reading, thinking or talking
  • Worse: for warm, damp heat and pressure

Treatment Tips

Use at the first sign of varicose veins or haemorrhoids or when these conditions become worse. Treatment can be backed up with a cream or ointment applied directly onto the affected sites.
