Home Remedies For Food Poisoning

Food poisoning can cause terrible vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps. It is the body's way of getting rid of food that is bad or disagrees with it and is usually caused by germs that inflame the lining of the stomach and intestines. The main problem with food poisoning is fluid loss which causes dehydration, so it is important to keep up your liquid intake.

In the old days, remedies included a rather disgusting concoction of salt swiftly followed by a spoonful of castor oil. For mild food poisoning take raw garlic, which helps to fight the infection in the gut. Replace lost fluid by drinking plain water or diluted fruit juice.

Blackberry root has been used for years to combat the deadly form of dysentery so common in hot climates. During the American Revolution both sides accepted truces so that troops could go 'rooting' for blackberry roots and leaves. It is still one of the safest remedies for children's diarrhea.

Stewed fennel, horseradish leaves or a strong dose of apple cider vinegar have all been used to help remove bad food from the digestive system.

In most cases, the effective treatment is to lie down and drink plenty of bland fluids such as water, diluted fruit juice or light tea.
