Home Remedies For Sciatica

Sciatica is an excruciating back condition caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs down the back of the leg to the knee. It is caused by pressure in the lower spine, inflammation of the nerve itself or by back strain or injury, which may need to be seen by a back expert.

Some people swear by ivy. Take two handfuls of ivy, chop well and mix with two handfuls of bran. Stir to a paste with 300ml (Y2 pint) of water and warm over a low heat for 10 minutes. Apply to the affected area using a cloth and leave for half an hour.

A cupful of Epsom salts added to a hot bath will ease the pain of sciatica, particularly if it is brought on by cold and damp. A daily supplement of seaweed extract is invaluable for back pain of any sort because of its iodine content. One dessertspoon of mustard or cayenne pepper in a hot bath will ease a bad back. You can also get relief from back pain by taking a warm bath infused with nettles and by having a lot of rest in a firm bed.

Make up a camphor rub from a quarter of a teaspoon each of camphor and mustard powder. Add 300ml (1/2 pint) of pure turpentine and 300ml (1/2 pint) of sunflower oil, mix with 300ml (1/2 pint) of rubbing alcohol and shake the ingredients together. Use it to massage an aching back or any other limbs that are seized up. Keep the area warm.
