Home Remedies For Period Pains

Period pains, also known as dysmenorrhoea, are the searing pains felt in the lower abdomen by more than half the female population during a period. About 15 per cent of those women say the pain interferes with their everyday lives. Period pains tend to start during adolescence and become less severe with age - particularly after having a baby.

Home remedies for Period Pains

Brown rice, wholemeal bread, oats, nuts and beans will all increase the magnesium, iron, zinc and vitamins in your body, which help you to fight pain.A warm bath with a few drops of chamomile or clary sage essential oils will ease tension and relax muscles. Geranium and rosemary essential oils counter fluid retention.

Angelica is a warming, stimulating herb suited to women who feel a chill during periods. To make a tea, add one part each of angelica, chamomile and ginger root to 600ml (1 pint) of water and simmer for 15 minutes.

Dandelion is a good source of iron and is one of the best diuretics, supplying plenty of potassium which helps to get rid of excess water. Add young dandelion leaves to a fresh green salad for an appetising remedy. Yarrow tea can help ease menstrual cramps and decrease menstrual bleeding.

Massage warm castor oil over the lower abdomen. Hot, fresh ginger tea or fresh ginger infused in milk is one of the oldest remedies for period pains. Boil up rhubarb roots into a tea, or try basil tea if you suffer with cramps and particularly heavy periods.
